Without wanting to sound naïve, I think this has to do with giving Israel the feeling that they can't "just do whatever they like". Strategically, Douste-Blazy is 100% correct... I'm sure that privately, Condoleeza Rice would agree.
Tom - it's hard to see what kind of stabilising influence Iran can possibly be.
They are trying to go nuclear, they want to wipe Israel off the map, they hate Sunni muslims almost as much as they hate Jews and they wd be happy to see oil over $100 a barrel.
